Surveying
Surveying is the method and science of accurately determining the terrestrial or three-dimensional space position of points and the distances and angles between them on the surface of the Earth. These points are usually used to establish land maps and boundaries for ownership or governmental purposes. Surveying is based on the elements of geometry, engineering, trigonometry, mathematics, physics, and law. The fundamental concepts of surveying have not changed since the Egyptians laid out the pyramids with simple geometry. Our nations greatest leaders started their careers as surveyors. Many people do not realize that three of the four presidents enshrined on Mt. Rushmore are surveyors.
Boundary Surveys
Property and easement descriptions can be very confusing when connecting the written words and intent with the evidence found on the ground. We are experts at the complex task of interpreting legal descriptions, applying the historical record, finding physical evidence and applying a rigorous mathematical solution. Each parcel of property has a unique description that depends on a certain set of controlling monumentation. We can unravel conflicting descriptions and apply established rules of law. We can advise when “deeded rights” may conflict with “occupied rights”. We can work with your attorney to provide maps and descriptions that will protect your rights.
Property Divisions

ALTA/ACSM Surveys
An ALTA/ACSM survey is a standard developed by the American Land Title Association and the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. Often known as a ALTA survey, it is a survey that connects a specific title policy, and the elements contained within that policy to the boundary lines, easements, and physical manmade objects on the ground. ALTA surveys are usually part of a real estate or refinance transaction. We are experienced ALTA/ACSM surveyors that understand the time constraints that are normal for complex real estate transactions. Whether you are an attorney, real estate professional, developer or other interested party, we will help you understand how title elements affect the subject property.
Topographic Surveys

May & Associates can provide you with exceptional service for your construction projects. We are highly experienced at staking roads, buildings, utilities, bridges and other improvements. We only use high quality oak for our stakes and long lasting permanent markers. We will develop a plan to meet your construction schedule and method of construction. We can assist in tracking construction quantities and provide detailed as-built drawings when the project is complete.
Airport Surveys
Are you a prime contractor or engineer on an airport expansion? Let May & Associates, Inc. help you develop your projects. We are very experienced in airport surveys. Our personnel are versed in radio communications and operating within the airport. We have performed data collection and construction staking on both small and large carrier airports in Michigan. We can provide control and stakeout for navigation projects, obstruction surveys, tree surveys, pavement crack monitoring analysis, property accusations, shadow surveys, height modernization and environmental monitoring.
Subdivision and Condominium Development
May & Associates, Inc. can assist you with the development of subdivisions regulated under PA 288 and site condominiums regulated under PA 59. We can assist in the initial planning, environmental considerations, lot layout, road design, and utility design.
Recent Projects
Village of Hillman Eco/Industrial Park Improvements
The Village of Hillman with the assistance of May & Associates has just completed the expansion of sanitary and water facilities within the Industrial Park. The total project cost was approximately 1.8 million dollars. Included in the improvements was the expansion of the village’s sewage lagoon system. May & Associates, Inc. partnered with Sarah Ross, P.E. of Practical Engineering to design the improvements and submit the plans and specifications to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. After the contractor was selected, May & Associates provided the construction engineering for the project.
